MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

This is a rare opportunity to take on a leadership role within one of the UK’s leading trade bodies, representing innovative, and entrepreneurial businesses in a fast paced and rapidly developing young business sector.

Based in Westminster and reporting directly to the Board, this role is a unique opportunity for anyone who is interested in a leadership role within a challenging and varied environment.

The organisation is looking to recruit a Managing Director based at their Westminster office to be responsible for the day-to-day running and strategic direction of the organisation.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Day-to-Day (40% of Time)

1. Ensuring the smooth running of the organisation on a day-to-day basis,

2. Managing the team in the Westminster office,

3. Being the main link between the Westminster office and the Board,

4. Providing day-to-day guidance and support to the Westminster office,

5. Developing strategies to implement decisions taken by the Board,

6. Attending Board meetings,

7. Managing the day-to-day finances of the organisation and developing budgets and a financial plan to ensure the sound financial management of the organisation.

8. Representing the organisation externally where necessary,

9. Leading on all policy, public affairs, and media work,

10. Drafting consultation responses and briefing papers.

External Engagement (30% of Time)

Membership (15% of Time)

11. Working with the Membership Manager to ensure that the organisation delivers the very highest level of services for existing members,12. To continue to attract new members and accelerate growth where possible.

Partnerships (15% of Time)

13. Continue to develop established relationships with key partners in public health, government departments, politicians at all levels across the UK, and regulators, in order to build on the achievements of the organisation to date, and

14. Develop new partnerships with other relevant individuals, organisations, and like-minded independent vape industry associations.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Knowledge and Technical Skills 

Essential - Level 1 (Significant expert knowledge)

Public Relations and the Media

To be responsible for the organisations external relations with the media and press,

To draft press releases and develop news stories and feed them into the media/press,

Develop relationships with key journalists and media outlets, and

Establish the organisation as the authoritative go to organisation for all the media and press on items relating to the sector.

Public affairs and Government Relations

To be responsible for the organisations external relations with government departments, Brussels, and politicians at all levels on items relating to the sector,

To draft briefings and respond to consultations.

To initiate engagement and educational events in Brussels, Westminster, and the devolved institutions,

To proactively reach out to politicians at all levels to raise issues of importance to the sector, and

As and when necessary to represent the organisation externally in meetings with politicians and officials.

Essential - Level 2 (Specialist knowledge)


Partnerships and Relationships

Relationship management with staff internally, the Board, external stakeholders, association members and suppliers.

Managerial

Managing the organisation on a day-to-day basis, including the setting of strategies, objectives, priorities and budgets,

Ensuring the sound financial management of the organisation, and 

Managing the organisation’s staff, encouraging them in their roles, and helping them to develop themselves and their careers.

Other

Ability to travel within the UK and Europe to fulfil the requirements of the role, and

Additional hours will be required as and when necessary to meet organisation’s requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree qualified or similar experience in a similar field for 5+ years essential.
  • Relevant business-related degree desirable.

EXPERIENCE

  • Technical professional experience - at least 5 years required.
  • People management experience - at least 5 years required.
  • Budgetary management experience - at least 5 years required.
  • Policy and public affairs experience - at least 10 years required.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Essential

  • Written communication: newsletters, briefings, press releases, and consultation responses.
  • Oral communication: speeches, representing the organisation in external meetings.
  • Presentations: internal and external.
