Media Writing Training
Over 90 per cent of the news published by media outlets comes from public relations agencies and departments. But only one per cent of this material will see the light of day.
What makes the difference? One important factor is knowing key media contacts personally. Another is knowing how to write media material in line with the rules and conventions that our media ‘customers’ observe themselves. Another is understanding what the media want, so that a weak story can be presented more compellingly.
This workshop describes how to raise our media hit-rate by using topicality, creativity, photography, infographics and video. It explains how journalists are trained to write and shows how we can make our media material work harder by complying with editors’ expectations. It discusses the best ways to establish and maintain media contacts and how to ‘sell-in’ a story successfully.
The workshop consists of tutorial, discussion examples and numerous practical exercises.
The presenter is a former reporter and the author of the Public Relations and Communications Association’s Practice Guide ‘Writing for the Media’.
